Alex Jackson

Alex Jackson is a Bay Area conceptual and environmental artist whose work examines how society represents, manages and interprets the natural world. He earned his M.F.A. in studio art from the University of California, Davis, in 1992. His installation Our National Scenic Resources, created during his graduate studies, appropriates the familiar format of National Park Service information displays to question the cultural assumptions underlying environmental conservation and tourism. Combining found imagery, government publications, advertising and academic texts, Jackson creates fictional interpretive pamphlets that reveal contradictions in humanity's relationship with nature. The project was revisited in TURF: Ecological Activism and Art at Diablo Valley College Art Gallery in 2011. Jackson has taught at Diablo Valley College and San Francisco State University and remains active in the Bay Area arts community.
