Ann Frick Vernon (1944–2020) was a painter and draftsperson whose densely populated compositions explored mythology, identity, artistic creation and the natural world. Born in Palo Alto, California, she earned an M.F.A. in painting from the University of California, Davis, where she studied with Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, William T. Wiley and Peter Saul. Her early drawings reflected the irreverence and imaginative freedom of Bay Area Funk art. During the 1980s and 1990s, she developed elaborate narrative compositions featuring the Tall Bold Woman, an artist-heroine carrying an oversized paintbrush through fantastical landscapes populated by animals, symbolic figures and threatened cities. Her later Desert Pilgrim and Blue Trees series drew inspiration from the landscapes of southern Utah and her interest in mythology and environmental change. Vernon exhibited at the Crocker Art Museum, Allan Frumkin Gallery and Paul Thiebaud Gallery. Her Poet and the Playgirl series is represented in the Fine Arts Collection. In 2023, Anglim/Trimble Gallery in San Francisco presented Narratives, a posthumous exhibition of her drawings and paintings.
