April Glory Funcke (b. 1952) is a painter whose still lifes explore the relationships among observation, memory, color and form. She earned her B.A. in 1987 and M.F.A. in 1989 from the University of California, Davis, where she studied with Wayne Thiebaud and served as his teaching assistant. Working primarily in oil, Funcke transforms everyday subjects—particularly flowers gathered from her own garden—into carefully observed compositions that balance realism with subtle abstraction. Her paintings emphasize the expressive possibilities of pigment, brushwork and the arrangement of objects in space. She received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award in 1994–95 to research and lecture at the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. Funcke has taught at UC Santa Barbara, Stanford University and City College of San Francisco.
