Arthur González

Arthur González (b. 1954) is a sculptor, painter and educator whose ceramic figures explore the complexities of human experience. Born in Sacramento, he earned his B.A. in 1977 and M.A. in 1979 from California State University, Sacramento, and his M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of California, Davis, in 1981. At Davis, he developed an expressive figurative approach that combines ceramics with found objects and unconventional materials. His work, often dark, humorous and brough in appearance, examines vulnerability, contradiction and the human condition. González participated in the influential East Village art scene in New York during the 1980s and has exhibited internationally in more than 50 solo exhibitions. A longtime professor at California College of the Arts, he has received four National Endowment for the Arts fellowships.
