Ayanah Moor (b. 1973) is a multidisciplinary artist whose paintings, prints, drawings and performances center Black and queer experiences. Working with geometric forms, gestural marks, text and references to popular culture, Moor uses what she calls “social abstraction” to challenge the idea that abstraction exists apart from identity. Her work explores Black desire, joy and presence while embracing ambiguity and what she describes as a “queerness of possibility.” Moor earned her B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995 and M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, in 1998. She is an associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Studio Museum in Harlem and Andy Warhol Museum, among other venues. In 2023, the Manetti Shrem Museum presented Undercover, her first West Coast solo museum exhibition, which explored race, gender and sexuality through recent abstract paintings.
