Carroll Dunham (b. 1949) moves between abstraction and figuration, creating a distinctive visual language informed by modernist painting, Surrealism, Pop art, science fiction, comics and cartoons. He received his B.A. from Trinity College in 1972 and emerged in New York during the early 1980s. Working across painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, Dunham combines energetic line, vivid color and biomorphic forms with exaggerated nude figures engaged in elemental activities including sex, fighting, walking and bathing. Often humorous, awkward and deliberately provocative, his work challenges distinctions between abstraction and figuration, high and popular culture, and image and subject. Dunham participated in the Whitney Biennials of 1985, 1991 and 1995, and the New Museum presented a major survey of his paintings in 2002. His work is held in prominent collections including the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art.
