Carter Garbett

Carter (Dan) Garbett (1953–2022) was a painter, sculptor and educator whose artistic practice remained central to his life. Born in Pocatello, Idaho, he studied at Idaho State University before transferring to the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in art. He received his M.F.A. in studio art from the University of California, Davis, in 1979. Returning to his hometown of Pocatello, Garbett continued to paint and sculpt while working for many years as a substitute teacher in the local school district. An enthusiastic outdoorsman, he spent more than three decades traveling to Hood River, Oregon, to windsurf on the Columbia River. He also enjoyed hiking and kayaking in the Idaho landscape.
