David King

David King (b. 1937) is a sculptor associated with Northern California’s experimental art traditions. Born in Sacramento, he studied with Wayne Thiebaud at Sacramento City College during the 1950s and continued his studies with Thiebaud at University of California, Davis, where he earned his M.A. in studio art in 1966. King became known for imaginative sculptures of everyday tools, particularly hammers, which he transformed into surreal and humorous objects. His work frequently references art history, using familiar forms to reinterpret iconic artworks and challenge conventional relationships between function and representation. King taught briefly at UC Davis before joining Diablo Valley College, where he taught for 35 years.
