Frank Damiano

Frank Damiano is an American painter who focuses on still lifes that explore the symbolic meanings embedded in ordinary objects and the conventions of realist painting. He earned a B.A. in 1984 and M.A. in 1985 from Central Washington University and an M.F.A. in 1987 from the University of California, Davis. Damiano’s early paintings and collages often presented objects like emblems or elements of heraldry, emphasizing their symbolic qualities. As his work developed, he increasingly drew on observed reality while retaining an interest in objects as signs and archetypes. Familiar items—a sock monkey, toys, balloons and other mass-produced goods—become emblems of contemporary American life and consumer culture. Although his carefully rendered paintings draw upon the long tradition of still life, Damiano does not treat realism as straightforward representation. Instead, his arrangements call attention to the ways objects are selected, staged and depicted, encouraging viewers to consider how images construct meaning. His work combines the visual language of traditional realist painting with a fundamentally conceptual approach to representation
