Fred Martin

Fred Martin (1927–2019) was a Bay Area artist, writer, curator and arts educator whose career spanned more than six decades. Born in San Francisco, Martin studied at the University of California, Berkeley, earning his B.A. in 1949 and M.F.A. in 1954. He became closely associated with the Bay Area’s postwar art community while developing a practice that included painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and artist’s books. Martin’s work often combined figurative imagery, literary and mythological references, autobiography, and dreamlike narratives. He pursued a deeply personal form of image-making concerned with memory, spirituality, storytelling, and the role of the artist. He was also an important advocate for other artists. As director of exhibitions at the San Francisco Art Institute and later dean and professor at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts), Martin influenced generations of Northern California artists. His work has been exhibited extensively and is represented in numerous public collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
