Frederick Hirsch

Frederick (Ted) Hirsch (b. 1950) is a British-born sculptor and educator whose work explores the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. Born in London, he studied Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard College and earned his M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of California, Davis, in 1993. His carved and painted wooden sculptures combine organic forms with references to contemporary civilization, often suggesting tensions between nature and human intervention. His site-specific sculpture This Redwood Tree (1992), created from a partially felled redwood on the UC Davis campus, exemplifies his interest in the history and transformation of natural materials. Hirsch exhibited his sculptures in Washington, D.C., during the late 1980s, including at Gallery K and the Spring Hill Site Project. After nearly two decades as a professional artist, he transitioned into education, serving as a teacher and charter school principal in Massachusetts.
