Genevra Daley works across soft sculpture, ceramics, painting, basketry and other media, transforming familiar materials and domestic forms into objects that evoke the body, memory and lived experience. Her tactile practice emphasizes the physical act of making—combining, punching, squeezing, coaxing and stitching materials until, as she describes it, patterns emerge that “begin to mean something beyond their original use.” Daley earned her M.F.A. from UC Davis, where she received the Robert Arneson Art Award, Mary Lou Osborn Award, and 2021 Keister & Allen Art Purchase Prize. Her work reflects the UC Davis art program’s longstanding emphasis on experimentation with materials and the elevation of everyday objects and experiences as subjects for art. Moving fluidly between traditional distinctions of art and craft, Daley draws upon techniques associated with ceramics, textiles and basketry to explore how ordinary materials can carry physical and emotional memory.
