Horace Washington (b. 1945) is a sculptor, muralist and educator whose work ranges from intimate ceramic and cast-concrete masks to large-scale public art. Beginning in the 1970s, Washington created a varied series of stylized masks drawing upon African diasporic and other cultural traditions. His Untitled (Mask) (1988), held in the UC Davis Fine Arts Collection, was featured in the Manetti Shrem Museum’s 2017 exhibition Dimensions of Black. Washington earned his B.F.A. in sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1970 and M.A. in sculpture from California State University, Sacramento, in 1973. His later career has focused extensively on public art. His projects include San Francisco’s International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union Memorial and Third Street Light Rail installations, work for Seattle Center, and A Tribute to Industry (1994) at Los Angeles Metro’s Vernon Station. The Vernon Station project received a national Design for Transportation award in 1995.
