Jan Gallione

Jan Gallione (1959–1994) was an American painter, performance artist and educator whose promising career was cut short by her death at age 34. Based in New York City, she earned her M.F.A. in studio art from the University of California, Davis, in 1989. Her artistic practice encompassed painting, collage and performance, drawing on mythology, personal narrative and cultural traditions. Her UC Davis graduate project, The Labors of Clementine (1989), incorporated performance and music into an imaginative reinterpretation of American folklore. Gallione participated in artist residencies throughout the United States and Europe, including Yaddo, and was associated with Skowhegan School, Zabriskie Gallery and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her work received recognition through the National Academy of Design's Julius Hallgarten Prize. Gallione's career and travels are documented in her correspondence with Cynthia LeRoy, preserved in the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art.
