Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (1940–2025), a citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation, was a groundbreaking artist, curator and advocate for Native artists. Combining abstraction with imagery drawn from maps, newspapers, advertising and popular culture, she confronted histories of colonization, displacement and environmental destruction while challenging stereotypes of Indigenous peoples. Humor, satire and appropriation allowed Smith to turn familiar symbols of American identity into pointed critiques of whose histories—and whose claims to the land—are recognized. Smith earned her B.A. from Framingham State College in 1976 and a M.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1980. Throughout her career, she curated exhibitions and created opportunities for Native artists, working to break what she called the “buckskin ceiling.” In 2023, the Whitney Museum of American Art presented Memory Map, the largest retrospective of her career.
