Jeremy Hillhouse

Jeremy Hillhouse (1940–2009) was an abstract painter and museum exhibition designer whose work drew inspiration from the landscapes of his native Colorado. Born in Colorado Springs, he graduated from Colorado College in 1962 and earned his M.A. in studio art from the University of California, Davis, in 1966. His large-scale acrylic paintings transform the plains, rivers and horizons of the American West into expressive compositions of color, line and gesture. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism, particularly Clyfford Still, Hillhouse sought to convey his experience and memory of landscape rather than its literal appearance. In 1970, he returned to Colorado, joining the Denver Art Museum, where he established and directed its exhibition design department until retiring in 2000. He exhibited at William Havu Gallery and other Denver venues, and his paintings are held by the Denver Art Museum and Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.
