Jim Adamson

Jim Adamson (b. 1939) is a ceramic artist associated with the emergence of Funk art at the University of California, Davis, during the 1960s. Adamson earned an M.A. in 1966 from UC Davis, where he studied ceramics with Robert Arneson. Adamson was part of a remarkable group of students working in this experimental environment alongside artists including David Gilhooly, Richard Shaw, Margaret Dodd, Chris Unterseher and Bruce Nauman. In 1966, Adamson’s work was included in Ceramics from Davis, an exhibition organized around Arneson and his students that demonstrated the emerging possibilities of clay as contemporary sculpture. Adamson continued to create irreverent ceramic works associated with Northern California Funk, including sculptures that playfully transform familiar objects and traditional ceramic forms.
