Johanna Barron

Johanna (Joby) Barron is an interdisciplinary artist whose work examines relationships among landscape, surveillance, government secrecy and the history of nuclear technology. Barron earned an M.F.A. in 2009 from the University of California, Davis. Working across photography, video, sculpture, installation and performance, she frequently uses archival research and fieldwork to investigate sites shaped by military and governmental activity. Much of Barron’s work focuses on the physical and psychological landscapes of the American West, particularly places associated with Cold War weapons development and nuclear testing. Her long-term project The Nuclear Landscape investigates the visual culture and physical remains of the nuclear age, bringing together photographs, documents and other forms of evidence to consider how histories of military technology persist in contemporary landscapes. Through these research-driven projects, Barron examines what is visible, what is deliberately concealed and how photography can both reveal and complicate our understanding of politically charged places.
