John Buck (b. 1946, Ames, Iowa) is a sculptor and printmaker known for intricately carved wood sculptures, monumental bronzes and large-scale, multicolored woodblock prints. Drawing from popular culture, current events, history and the natural world, Buck builds a dense visual vocabulary of figures, symbols and objects to explore social and political issues with humor, ambiguity and imaginative complexity. Buck earned his B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1968 and his M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis, in 1972. At UC Davis, he studied with Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, Manuel Neri and William T. Wiley, later describing his experience there as pivotal to his artistic development. He also met fellow sculptor Deborah Butterfield, whom he married, while at Davis. Buck subsequently taught at Humboldt State University and Montana State University. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum and Art Institute of Chicago.
