John Carter

John Carter (b. 1970) is a conceptual artist and filmmaker whose multidisciplinary practice explores identity, anonymity and the shifting boundaries between reality and representation. He works under the name Carter. Born in Norwich, Connecticut, Carter earned a B.F.A. (1992) from the Maryland Institute College of Art, attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1994 and received an M.F.A. (1997) from the University of California, Davis. Working across painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and film, Carter frequently obscures or transforms the human figure, challenging conventional ideas of portraiture and individuality. His film Erased James Franco (2008) examines celebrity and performance through the actor's reenactment of scenes from his film career. Carter's work was included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and has been presented at the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
