John P. Hoyt

John P. Hoyt is a painter and educator based in Alberta, Canada, whose surrealist imagery explores the tensions among religion, science, mythology and human psychology. He earned his M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis, in 1972. After teaching science in Rwanda from 1973 to 1979, Hoyt settled in Alberta, where he taught art and education at Canadian University College until retiring in 2019. His meticulously layered oil paintings draw inspiration from Northern European Renaissance painting, particularly Hieronymus Bosch, as well as German Expressionism and Surrealism. Combining historical imagery, personal symbolism and contemporary concerns, his compositions explore spirituality, identity and existential uncertainty.
