Joyce Fillip

Joyce Fillip (b. 1953) is an artist and educator whose practice encompasses sculpture, drawing and painting. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she earned her B.F.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1975 and her M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis, in 1978. Initially working in sculpture, Fillip turned to large-scale drawings in the early 1980s, exploring the dramatic forces of nature through images of tornadoes, waterfalls, earthquakes and icebergs. Her expressive compositions employ contrasts of light and shadow to evoke the physical and psychological power of natural phenomena. Her work was featured in Joyce Fillip: Natural Phenomena and Atmospheric Effects at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1986) and Monumental Drawing: Works by 22 Contemporary Americans at the Brooklyn Museum (1986). She received fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Yaddo, as well as a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1986. Fillip also maintained a distinguished teaching career, retiring from Ravenscroft School in 2020.
