Judith Golden

Judith Golden (1934–2023) was an influential photographer and mixed-media artist whose self-portraits explored gender, identity, popular culture and mythology. Born in Chicago, she earned her B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1973 and her M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis, in 1975. Her early photographic collages challenged media representations of women through humor, masquerade and appropriation. Later works incorporated hand-coloring, painting and assemblage to explore spirituality and myth. Golden taught at UCLA and the University of Arizona, where the Center for Creative Photography established the Judith Golden Archive in 1996. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the collections of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
