Karen Breschi (b. 1941) is an American ceramic sculptor known for fantastical figures that combine human, animal and plant forms. Born in Oakland, Breschi emerged as part of the Bay Area ceramics scene of the 1960s and ’70s. Her sculptures frequently transform the human body through exaggeration, humor and unexpected combinations of forms, using fantasy to explore psychological experience, gender, sexuality and relationships between humans and the natural world. Breschi earned her B.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts) in 1963 and her M.A. from San Francisco State University in 1965. Her work is held in major collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Oakland Museum of California, and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
