Katy Baucke is an artist and educator whose work explores relationships among language, landscape and visual imagery. Baucke earned an M.A. from Central Washington University and an M.F.A. in 1978 from the University of California, Davis. Working primarily through drawing and painting, she has explored both observed landscapes and less tangible forms of visual information, incorporating words, maps, scientific imagery and other systems of representation into her practice. After leaving California, Baucke established herself in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she maintained a studio practice while teaching art in both academic and community settings. Her work has been recognized with a New Hampshire Individual Artist Fellowship in 1983 and the New Hampshire Woman Artists’ Award in 1995. Baucke’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the State of New Hampshire. As an educator, she has encouraged an experimental approach to artmaking that brings together observation, imagination and the interplay of word and image.
