Kurt Edward Fishback (b. 1942) is a photographer, sculptor and educator best known for his portraits of artists in their studios and working environments. Born in Sacramento, he is the son of photographer Glen Fishback and was named in honor of Edward Weston, a family friend. He earned a B.F.A. in ceramics from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967 and an M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis, in 1970, where he studied sculpture with Robert Arneson and participated in the experimental ceramics community. Although initially working in sculpture, Fishback increasingly turned to photography, eventually creating hundreds of portraits documenting artists and their creative spaces. His book Art in Residence: West Coast Artists in Their Space (2000) includes portraits of Wayne Thiebaud, Ansel Adams and other influential artists. Fishback taught photography at Weber State University and several Northern California colleges.
