Lynn Hershman Leeson (b.1941) is a pioneering multimedia artist and filmmaker whose work explores identity, surveillance, technology, artificial intelligence and the relationship between humans and machines. For more than five decades, she has worked across photography, performance, video, film, installation, bio art and interactive and net-based media, often foregrounding questions about privacy, digital identity and technological control that have become increasingly urgent. Hershman Leeson taught at UC Davis from 1993 to 2004, where she was a professor in the Department of Art and Art History and helped expand the university’s engagement with emerging technologies and new media. She wrote, produced and directed her feature film Teknolust while at UC Davis. Internationally recognized for her groundbreaking practice, she has received a Guggenheim Fellowship along with numerous lifetime achievement awards.
