Marvin Jones

Marvin Jones (1940–2005) was a painter, sculptor, printmaker and educator whose work drew inspiration from Funk art. Born in Flora, Illinois, he earned his B.A. from Anderson College in 1964 and his M.A. in Sculpture from the University of California, Davis, in 1968. His paintings and prints combine eccentric forms, expressive color and a playful sensibility, often finding humor in unsettling or ambiguous imagery. Jones taught at several institutions, including the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of Alberta, before joining Cleveland State University in 1974. He became head of its Printmaking Department in 1985 and remained on the faculty until his death. His extensive exhibition career included more than 75 solo exhibitions throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. His work entered more than 40 public collections internationally. Jones also served as a visiting artist and artist-in-residence at institutions including the Rhode Island School of Design and Montalvo Center for the Arts.
