Ruby Neri (b. 1970) is a Los Angeles-based painter and sculptor whose exuberant figurative work draws on Bay Area Figuration, Funk art, graffiti and a wide range of art historical traditions. She earned her B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1994 and her M.F.A. from UCLA in 1998. The daughter of influential UC Davis sculptor Manuel Neri, she grew up surrounded by the artists and ideas that shaped Northern California art. In the 1990s, Neri made graffiti under the name Reminisce and became associated with the group of San Francisco artists later known as the Mission School. The experience remains visible in the sprayed surfaces and energetic drawing of her work. Today, she is best known for large-scale ceramic sculptures in which uninhibited female figures merge with vessels, animals and architectural forms. Sensuous, humorous and psychologically charged, her work explores the body, sexuality, agency, womanhood and motherhood. In 2025, the Manetti Shrem Museum presented Ruby Neri: Taking the Deep Dive, the artist’s first solo museum exhibition and a homecoming to the artistic community that profoundly shaped her practice.
