Susan Chrysler White

Susan Chrysler White (b. 1954) is a painter and sculptor whose abstractions explore the intersections of nature, science, ornament and contemporary life. Born in California and raised partly in Spain, White earned a B.A. in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.F.A. in 1980 from the University of California, Davis. Her paintings combine intricate patterns, calligraphy and translucent layers, evoking natural processes. Her sculptural installations incorporate painted Plexiglas and metal, creating elaborate, suspended forms inspired by Baroque ornamentation and organic structures. White is Professor Emerita of Painting and Drawing at the University of Iowa and has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. Her work has been presented at the Akron Art Museum and McNay Art Museum and is held in collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Worcester Art Museum.
