Theodore (Ted) Fontaine (b. 1952) is a painter, photographer, educator and musician whose work explores the transformed landscapes of contemporary life. He earned his M.F.A. in studio art from the University of California, Davis, in 1981, studying with Roy De Forest and Dan Shapiro. Fontaine's paintings draw inspiration from the commercial and industrial environment, incorporating automobiles, roads, utility poles and buildings into compositions that balance recognizable imagery with abstraction. His work has evolved to include imaginative figurative paintings, expressive color and layered visual narratives. A longtime member of the Davis arts community, Fontaine has taught art and photography at Davis Senior High School and participated in the Davis Mural Team, contributing to the city's public art. Fontaine is also an accomplished jazz bassist.
