Tony Natsoulas (b. 1959) is a Northern California ceramic sculptor known for large-scale, theatrical figures that combine portraiture, humor, satire and narrative. He earned his B.A. (1982) and M.F.A. (1985) from University of California, Davis, where he studied with Robert Arneson and absorbed the irreverent, experimental approach to clay associated with the university’s influential ceramic tradition. Natsoulas extends that legacy through exuberant portraits of musicians, artists and other culturally significant figures, often incorporating objects and symbols that reference their lives, accomplishments and social histories. Working at an exaggerated scale, Natsoulas embraces caricature, camp and visual excess while maintaining a strong attention to individual character. His work demonstrates the continuing influence of Funk art while developing a distinctive contemporary approach to figurative ceramics. Natsoulas has exhibited widely, and his work is held in numerous museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Oakland Museum of California and Crocker Art Museum.
