Woody De Othello (b. 1991) is an Oakland-based artist whose sculptures, paintings and drawings explore relationships among the body, everyday objects and the spiritual world. Best known for his expressive, hand-built ceramics, Othello animates familiar domestic forms—including clocks, mirrors, telephones and vessels—blurring distinctions between object and body. His practice honors Northern California’s influential ceramic tradition while drawing on knowledge and philosophies from around the world through a decolonial lens. Othello earned his B.F.A. from Florida Atlantic University and his M.F.A. from California College of the Arts. His work was included in the 2022 Whitney Biennial and is held in major museum collections nationwide. In 2026, the Manetti Shrem Museum commissioned one becomes two, two becomes one, a monumental bronze created for UC Davis on the occasion of the museum's 10th anniversary.
