Xico González (b. 1975) is an interdisciplinary artist, educator and community organizer whose politically charged posters bring art into the streets. Associated with the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF), González uses printmaking, photography, poetry and public art to address immigration, labor, racial justice and other social and political issues. His posters are intended not only for exhibition but for circulation at marches, protests and rallies, where art becomes a tool for community organizing and collective expression. González earned an M.A. in Spanish and a B.A. in Art Studio from California State University, Sacramento, in 2005, followed by an M.F.A. in Art Studio with an emphasis in printmaking from the University of California, Davis in 2007. At UC Davis, he worked with influential Chicano artist and professor Malaquías Montoya, whose politically engaged approach to printmaking helped shape the program. González later taught in UC Davis’ Chicana/o Studies Department. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
