In her work, Havilah Aos actively explores the indexical relationship between paper-casting and memory-making. Aos utilizes material subversion and transformation in her dissection of structures within in her present reality by imprinting paper against interior surfaces. The resulting paper casts are a physical response to an environment that she moves through daily. By materializing memories in paper, she creates a tangible interactive space which holds her internal worlds in stasis.
Our comprehension of place is fragmented, unique to our individual perception. Extreme emotions, subtle senses, and the experience of trauma all contribute to the imagination’s picture of a place, creating personalized environments that live solely in the mind. In Memory Space, Aos redirects her ongoing dissection of her present surroundings to reach into her own memories of certain past environments to investigate the continuous thread between them. Memory Space translates the experience of orientating one’s self in place into an experience of encounter with texture and form, bringing feeling into color and fantasy into reality.
