Derived from the Latin “to flow,” the earliest usage of the word "influence" described an intangible emanation from the stars that shaped human destiny. Wayne Thiebaud, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, is a star who shines as brightly today as at any point in his career. This exhibition celebrates Thiebaud’s achievement through the living legacies of countless artists who acknowledge his influence.
The 19 artists in this exhibition reflect the breadth of Thiebaud’s influence. Together they form a community of like-minded individuals who honor Thiebaud’s dedication to practicing the fundamentals; his penchant to paint the people, places and objects of daily life; and his passion for looking to the history of art as a source of inspiration. Together these artists chart an alternate course of how painting makes meaning in the 21st century.
Think of this exhibition as Thiebaud’s classroom operating across time and place, where works of art reverberate with the flow of shared ideas. And look for the many works made within the last year, during quarantine. This new work attests to the vitality and promise of painting, even during the most challenging of times.
